There are a lot of Disney characters which come from public domain, for example The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and many others. While many of these characters themselves are public domain and can be used freely, you have to remember that Disney's versions of them aren't public domain.
